Our Darkness and Light Animation with The Children’s Art School

September 4 - October 26

Over 700 children from schools in Kirklees are working with poets to create poems about their area. They will also make large-scale collaborative drawings of the local area that will be used as backdrops to their poems and will create puppets to tell the stories. An animation will then be produced with the children reading their poems and using stop motion animation to enact them. Campervan Radio with hcmf//

Working with Secondary schools and Libraries in Kirklees, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) is delivering radio podcasting and DJ workshops via a mobile radio, set up in a campervan that is touring the area over the next two months. The young people who take part in the workshops will have the opportunity to co-produce their own live radio and DJ night at a local venue. Imaginary Communities with Chol Theatre

Chol Theatre will create and present performances with up to 120 young people to be presented as part of Our Biennale using their immersive theatre making experience Imaginary Communities. This will be directed by Vicky Sawka and the children’s own ideas about the festival content. The schools involved in this project are Ashbrow School and North Huddersfield Trust School. The Great Kirklees Railway Exhibition with The Children’s Art School

September 4 - November 20

School children are producing 100 large-scale paintings to be exhibited throughout Our Biennale on the platforms at stations along the Penistone Line and at Huddersfield Station. Working with a poet and visual artist, the children and young people are creating poetry and paintings exploring light and dark. Dark Skies Project with Manasamitra and Duncan Chapman

The Dark Skies Project sees composer Duncan Chapman explore the patterns of the constellations as they are depicted in astronomy with children and young people. They are learning shapes and movement within the drawings; working with imagined sounds and creating a soundscape. Manasamitra are composing two new choral pieces with the children and young people. Transformation with Phoenix Dance Theatre

This project will be based around the central theme of Darkness and Light and is a collaboration between visual artists and Phoenix Dance Theatre. This September young people from New College Huddersfield are working alongside visual artist Zoe Robertson who will lead a series of workshops aimed at creating drawings, sculptures and wearable objects in response to the theme.
